 A week later I lay back in the clear hot bathwater and contemplated Africa. The sarcophagal bathtub was almost six feet long; I had to point my toes to keep my head from slipping under. The bathtub was one of the many surprises that first week at the Red House, or “Kiserigwa” as it was called in Swahili. The Red House had been built by the owners of Kekopey for a short-lived ranch foreman, then abandoned, and was donated to Bob Harding and his family when they came to study the baboons in 1970. It had needed work: doorknobs and windowpanes were missing, and the only furnishings were the layers of bat droppings.

 スワヒリ語でキセリグワと言われる”赤い家”で最初の週に起こった様々な驚きの一つがバスタブだった。一週間後、私は澄んだ湯に浸かりながらアフリカについて考えていた。そのバスタブの長さは６フィートもあり、つま先で浴槽の壁を押さえながら頭が滑り落ちないようにしなければならなかった。私はまるで石棺に横たわっている気分だった。赤い家は短命牧場動物のためにケコピーの所有者によって建てられた後、一旦は放棄された建物だが、1970年にヒヒとその家族の研究のためにボブ・ハーディングへ寄付されたものだった。そこでの私の最初の仕事はドアノブと窓ガラスの修理と、コウモリの糞掃除だった。

 It was a funny house, full of incongruities, and it had seen better days. Thick stone walls and lots of windows made it cool and airy. The inside whitewash was dingy from a constant smoky pall, a combination of fumes from the kerosene refrigerator and the wood-burning stove. It had once been wired for electricity and telephone, but both had disappeared during the last twenty years. The kitchen boasted a splendid lime-green Dover stove, and the badly marked floors showed the remnants of still-beautiful parquet. Candles and hurricane lamps provided light at night. The stove provided hot water. When it burned for several hours, there was enough hot water for one luxurious bath or for several quick and miserly ones. Chopped wood provided fuel for cooking and heating water, laundry was done in the bathtub and ironed with a charcoal iron on a rickety ironing board.

非日常的日々を過ごしたこの赤い家は、ぶ厚い石壁と多くの窓で暑さが緩和された風通しのいい家だった。内部は灯油式冷蔵庫からの煙と蒔ストーブのせいで白く濁った色をしていて、以前あった電気や電話の配線は20年近く取り払われたままだった。台所には鮮やかな緑色のドブレ製の蒔ストーブがあり、傷だらけの床には美しい寄せ木細工の装飾が施されていた。夜はキャンドルとハリケーン・ランプ ※注1 を使い、ストーブで湯を沸かし始めてから数時間後には、豪華なバスタブにお湯が満たされた。調理と暖房のための燃料には小さな木片を使い、バスタブで洗濯をし、炭で熱したアイロンを珍しい形のアイロン台の上で使った。

 Compared to city life in California, this was roughing it. But compared to a tent pitched beneath an acacia tree in the middle of nowhere, it was sheer luxury. The odd U-shaped layout of the house forced everyone to walk through the main bedroom to get to the bathroom and the other bedroom. Right now it did seem a little crowded. My host, Matt Williams, and his wife shared the big bedroom. I had come to replace Matt, who himself had replaced Bob Harding. We were all student of Washburn. I shared the small second bedroom with three others. Lynda was also a Berkeley graduate student, who was studying black-and-white Colobus monkeys and hadn’t yet found a place to live. Tim Ransom was a friend of mine from Berkeley. Having just completed his doctorate in psychology, studying baboons at the Gombe Stream in Tanzania, where Jane Goodall studied chimpanzees, he had decided to become a wildlife photographer and was shooting pictures on assignment from the National Geographic. Squeezed into a third bed was Matt’s young daughter. With barely enough room to maneuver in our dormitory-style room, I was grateful for my privacy today; the others had gone to Nakuru, about forty-five minutes away, for supplies.

 An Abaluya house-servant-cum-cook made the baboon work possible. Without Joab, much of each day would have been sacrificed to simple household chores. Joab was elderly, wise and kind. He had already ministered to me during my first bout of dysentery. He had tapped gently on my door, and entered holding a pitcher of water. In mime he urged me to drink, realizing more than I did that dehydration was causing the worst of my symptoms. He was right.

 The garish orange exterior of the Red House seemed out of place.It sat on a hill, hidden from below by a dense thicket of tall leleshwa bushes. A magnificent view extended in all directions. On one side was the Mau escarpment of the Rift Valley, with volcanic foothills guarding the approach. Eburru, one of those peaks, steamed on cold days. On another side were steplike scarps that ran the length of Kekopey. Beyond the grassland plateaus I could just glimpse Lake Elementeita. The shallow alkaline water resembled an iridescent mirror edged with a road pink ribbon. Thousands of pink flamingos, attracted by the abundant algae, lived on the lake. A series of small hills completed the panorama, rising from the faults above the lake. This was Gili Gili -the source of the rivers and Kekopey’s water. Water traveled from a hot spring through fifteen miles of underg
round pipes to a pumping station and then up the cliffline to the Red House and beyond.

日当たりのいい丘の上にあった”赤い家”は、むしろ華やかなオレンジ色の外観であり、背の低いレルシュワの密集した茂みに囲まれていた。全方向が見渡せる壮大なパノラマと、 片側にはリフトバレーのマウ（Mau）の断崖があり火山の麓でもあって、ここへのアプローチを困難なものにしていた。 寒い日にはこの連峰の一つであるエバーラ（Eburru）の山際には霧が立った。別の側では、ケコピー目一杯のステップ状の鋭い棘があった。 草原の台地を越えて、私はエレメンテイタ湖を垣間見ることができた。 その浅いアルカリ水は、道路のピンクのリボンで縁取られた虹色の鏡に似ていた。 豊富な藻類に引き寄せられた何千ものピンク・フラミンゴが住んでいて、一連の小さなはその湖から上昇する断層としてのパノラマを完成させていた。 この湖はギリギリ（Gili Gili）と呼ばれる河川とケコピエの水源であり、その水は温泉から地下15キロメートルのパイプを通してポンピング・ステーションから崖の上の赤い家まで延びていた。

 The view from the bathtub, through high-level windows, was to become one of my favorites. I could lie in the water and stare at the immense sky, which dominated the landscape in all seasons. This was September, the end of the winter months which are cold, dry and overcast. Today the clouds were large billows of white, partially obscuring the intense blue sky. Even the filtered light made me squint in my bath.

浴槽からの眺めはとても素敵な窓を通して、私のお気に入りの一つになった。 私は湯の中に横たわり、すべての季節の風景を支配した巨大な空を目まの当たりにすることができた。 九月の寒く乾燥した曇った冬の終わりのこと、その日の雲は白い巨大な大波で強烈な青色の空を部分的に隠していた。 雲にろ過された光が私の浴槽に届いていた。

 I thought about Matt. I had known him only casually in graduate school. He seemed as unlikely a field worker as I was, being a raconteur and a gourmet cook; his interest was primate communication.

私はマットに思いを馳せた。 大学院では彼を僅かしか知らずにいたが、彼は私のような現場作業員ではなく、レコンテルと美味しい料理人であり、 彼の関心は霊長類のコミュニケーションに関することだった。

 Tim and I depended on Matt for our introduction to the Pumphouse Gang. It had taken us this whole week to find them. Only then did I really understand Matt’s assurance that the troop, having been observed and followed by two graduate students since 1970, was now accustomed to being observed.

ティムと私は、一週間かけてパンプハウス・ギャングを見つけると、マットに頼んで紹介して貰うことにした。然しただそれだけでは、1970年以来二人の大学院生によって観察され続けてきた部隊が、現在観察に慣れたマットの確信を本当に理解したことにはならない。

 “You want to get out?” he had asked incredulously. “Out? Of the van?” It was the white VW van the monkeys accepted, not people. According to Matt, danger lurked everywhere. There were poisonous snakes, vicious warthogs who would rather gore you with their tusks than look at you; crazed male buffalo harboring resentment along with stray bullets, ready to take their revenge on any human; there were even large predators. Matt was firm. We must not leave the van.

「出るの？」 マットは信じられないといった表情で再び私に尋ねた「バンの外に？」 それは猿が受け入れた白いVWバンだったが、マットは危険はどこにでも潜んでいると言った。「有毒なヘビが君を見るよりも、むしろ牙で君を噛む悪質で黒い獣がいる。 それは、どんな人間にも復讐する準備があり野蛮な銃弾に憤慨している狂った男性の水牛だ。 他にもっと大きな捕食者だっている」 マットは厳重に我々を諌めた。 我々はバンを離れてはいけないのだった。

ご訪問ありがとうございます。いよいよ師走ですね、皆様如何お過ごしでしょうか？ 

この二、三日の間、人類が二足歩行へと進化した理由について、いろいろ調べてました。

さて二足歩行の要因には、恐らく三つあるのではないかと思われます。

１つ目は、身を容易に隠せる森の生活から、捕食動物に命を奪われ易い、見通しの良い広大なサバンナ地帯へと移動したことで、目の位置をより高くして捕食動物との距離を計る必要に迫られた為です。

ミーアキャットやエリマキトカゲ、バジリスクなども時折そのような行動をします。

タワシは自分が臆病であることを嫌に思うことがよくありますが、臆病であることは、長く生きようとする本能の現れのようですから仕方ないのかも知れません。
